Second Movie Review - The Billionaire (Top Secret)

My Second Movie Review
It was 9pm. Just when my younger brother was about to leave me alone and jump into his bed, I asked him to help me download a Thai movie which was highly recommended in a certain group page in FB. Unsure if the movie is not infected with virus, we opted to try our luck in Youtube. After three search attempts, with my eyes wide open I was certain that I would be in front of this flat screen for the next two hours.

The Billionaire is a film based on a true story of a Thai teenager named Aitthipat Kulapongvanich also known as Top Ittipat, one of the youngest billionaires in the world. At age 16, Top spent most of his time playing online games instead of studying. His addiction to online games, however, generated so much money that he was able to buy a car for himself. Unfortunately, the “easy money” he was gaining didn’t last long. He decided to drop out of school and sought other business opportunities such as selling cheap DVDs to roasted chestnuts. The former was a failure from the very beginning. The roasted chestnut business, however, somehow gave him hope. One day, he discovered that his family was in big financial trouble. Bankruptcy and huge debt triggered his family to go to China.  But Top refused to go with them and decided to continue with his business. Just when his roasted chestnut biz was starting to make money, he realized that even though he makes one million Baht per year, this amount couldn’t pay his father’s 40 million Baht debt. Top, with the help of his ever supportive uncle, continued to persevere.  Finally, at age 19, he was able to create a product that made him truly rich and famous. He released ‘Tao Kae Noi’ fried seaweed snack to more than 3,000 7-Eleven branches and the rest is history…

If you are a student taking up business, or an aspiring entrepreneur, or just someone looking for inspiration to keep going, this movie is a must watch. Top’s failure after failure after failure is inevitably heartbreaking but hilarious in a certain way. The various mistakes he made will surely make you laugh. And the result of some of his decisions will make you sigh. But Top’s sheer hardwork, perseverance and natural entrepreneurial mindset are what make this film remarkably interesting. That at the end of this film, you would wish to shake his hand or pat his shoulder or give him a hug for a job well done.

Top’s simple words of wisdom:
“Do not lose your courage --- no matter what… Because if we give up --- game is over!!!”

Superb Sundate with Cousins

Hello my dear blog! I took a long break in blogging and now…where do I begin?

Many times I felt a great desire to make an update - about my dog that died last May or about my travel adventure with my high school friends version 2.0. Apparently, I struggled with procrastination. But now I’m back…with a happy story to tell. Because this blog deserves a blissful comeback.

Let me share with you a speck of my Sunday Pasay Getaway.

After numerous weeks of planning, last June 29 my cousins and I finally had a fun fun fun Sundate. We were only six - me, my four younger cousins and our aunt who is also younger than me.  We started the day by attending the Kerygma Feast at PICC. That was the first time for my two female cousins. Attending The Feast never fails to set a good mood.  Past 12pm, we had lunch. Since Flaming Wings and Zarks were both closed we ended up filling our starving tummy at Yellow Cab, Taft Avenue. While waiting for our order to be served, we took our first groupie and second and third and fourth etc.

Getting ready to rumble!!!

Before 2pm, we headed to our ultimate destination – Star City. We had a thrilling ride-all-you-can pass through Metrodeal’s promo worth Php280 instead of PhP420, a relatively affordable bonding activity for the six of us. Who wouldn't be happy getting a 30% discount? I was actually expecting a long queue towards the redeeming counter. But everything went so easy. Star City was not even crowded. The weather outside was also good. The whole world was seemingly conspiring to make good things happen on that day. We enjoyed (and sometimes feared) almost all rides available inside. However I just had to decline the Star Frisbee which for me has no dash of amusement. Giant Star Wheel was remarkably way better than SM MOA Eye. Bump Car is classic but has never failed to stimulate blood cells. Yet, Star Flyer was my personal favourite. The strong breeze rushing into my face was just breath-taking.

The view from The Giant Star Wheel

That's me while waiting for my four cousins with braveheart

The whole day was literally packed with stories, laughter, scream, selfie and groupie. But was it just about the fun that made that day superb? It was a rare moment though not for the four of us who live under one roof (hehe). To bond with our two female cousins was really monumental. Haha! I bet our cousins who were not with us that day were also surprised to see us together having a good time. More than that, it has paved way to reinforce family ties specially among us, cousins. In fact, the moment one of my cousins posted a number of photos in Facebook, some of our cousins in the province immediately expressed their wish to have a grand reunion. Well, that was the goal from the very beginning. It was just my simple dream and we made it happen. We were able to pull off a significant result. Sure it was a tiring day, but nevertheless very fulfilling. God is good.

Groupie before going home

P.S. We’ve only just begun. #iponiponnarinpagmaytime.

A Great Bonding Idea (I think)

This is a scene from the Korean movie Spellbound which was shown in Cinema One just few hours ago.

With big chips, mixed nuts, can of softdrinks, a portable DVD, a set of baraha, UNO stacko, comfy banig, few pillows, a mini emergency light and a huge tent, I just thought it's a fantastic bonding activity with friends or family. Camping ang peg in the comfort of your own home. What do you think?

And by the way, Spellbound is a perfect blend of horror, comedy and romance. Two Thumbs up. Recommended for this type of activity. : )

My First Movie Review: 100

It was a late Saturday night. Just when I thought of pressing the off button in the remote control, Mylene Dizon appeared in the boob tube in a silent scene. Few minutes later, she was joined by Eugene Domingo. I got nailed in the couch, instantly. This is not drama. It’s comedy. And it's not Cinema John Lloyd.

Fed up of seeing huge emotions and hearing long dialogues in both tv dramas and local movies, this film though a serious story was treated in a very simple, light and natural approach (as if the actors are not acting) yet tear jerking. It was an independent film about a woman in her thirty’s stricken with cancer played by Mylene Dizon. The entire movie revolves around the remaining days of the main character named Joyce (Mylene Dizon). Because of her grave condition, she decided to leave her successful career. Knowing that she only had few days to live she decided to live life to the fullest. She spontaneously wrote 100 things she would like to do in a small note pad and stick it in her wall. Together with her best friend Ruby (Eugene Domingo), every single day she would fulfill it with head up high and full of zest. Ruby, instead of crying a bucket of tears, joined Joyce and showered her best friend with time and attention.
.ar
Telling the painful truth to her mom (Tessie Tomas), was apparently the hardest thing to do in her bucket list since her father died of the same illness not so long ago. Joyce mother, in the beginning of the story, was seemingly living an easy and quite glamorous life. But as soon as she found out the poor health of her daughter her character naturally transformed. She then became a typical mom in a typical Filipino household just wearing simple clothes mostly duster, taking care of everything that her daughter needs. Hopeful, she brought Joyce to Manaoag Shrine and asked for a miracle; tried Chinese herbal medicines; sought different doctor’s opinion; had a pray-over rite, forcefully changed Joyce eating habits and prevented her from smoking. But nothing worked. In an emotional scene, Joyce pleaded her mother to just accept her situation so if and when she dies, she will die peacefully.

The story also showcased Joyce many relationships with other family members, former colleagues and a couple of love affairs. With loved ones beside her, she organized her fate with such order and gusto as though a fabulous event is about to unfold.  I am putting an end here because I do not intend to give away the entirety of the movie. I highly encourage you to find a copy of this film and watch it yourself and be moved. This film will teach every viewer how to look at a difficult situation from a new angle with enthusiasm. There are many tearful scenes but expect to smile and laugh too. A perfect mixture of drama and a pinch of wit every now and then and a very valuable reminder that life is short...let us not waste it...

Himig ng Pag-ibig!

Yeng Constantino’s interview by VJ Chino of MYX a couple of days ago, stirred my interest in her and  her music. Her creativity is just amazing. The profoundness of her lyrics is just as deep as her true self. In this age where revivals are dominating, the more I appreciate original music. More importantly if it has substance. And I think Yeng’s music has it. No doubt, she deserves all the success.

I just love the simplicity of this music video. This one is my most favorite.

Bitten by a Snake

I watch Survivor Philippines.  Not a big fan but I catch it when no one is sitting in the couch. I extremely enjoy how the castaways battle for one more day. Undiscovered strengths become prominent. But there is one thing that I couldn’t comprehend- issues about betrayal. I’m sure before one becomes a castaway he must have an idea how this game is played by some. I just find it so odd that some still get surprise when they fall in a pitfall and realize that they have been victimized by a culprit…or should I say strategist and wiser?

Just maybe… because I have not tried a life in an island and battle for TUMATAGINTING NA TATLONG MILYONG PISO!!!

Mga Aral Mula Kay Mr. C

Posted 12/11/06 10:19 AM

Ryan Cayabyab's acceptance speech during the 12 Gawad CCP Para sa Sining.

Ang mga Natutunan Ko Hanggang Kahapon Bilang Isang Manunulat ng Musika:

Napanood Mo Ba? Wag Magpahuli. Uso 'to.

Marimar.
Maria del Barrio.
Rosalinda.
Betty La Fea.

Mei Zho at Shi Men.

***************

It’s 2009.

My Favorite Christmas Song

As usual dakdak dito; dakdak doon
Ang tatlong magkakagrupo biglang naging pilyo
First stanza'y biglang nabuo

Tantananantanan!!!

Usapang Alak Naman Mga Noypi

Wine Museum in the Philippines

Huling Patak; Huling Lagok

Wag mag-deny; Don’t tell a lie!

Minsan may halong tugtugan. Wag magdeny; Don’t tell a lie!

Wag mag-deny; Don’t tell a lie!

Wag mag-deny; Don’t tell a lie!

Wag mag-deny; Don’t tell a lie!

O Tukso Layuan Mo Ako

Ito rin ang ginagawang dahilan kapag nagkakasala ang isang tao(u know… the three letter word… u know).

So Please Don’t Drink and Drive!

Cheers! :)

The Top 5 Pinoy in My Screen

Meet Tristan Jovellana
This very talented interior designer and artist is one of the co-hosts of Ms. Tessa Prieto-Valdes in House Life, a home improvement show in QTV 11. He is House Life’s resident Handy Man - the man in charge of quick fix/ do-it-yourself projects. With his ingenious ability, he can turn junk into new home décor or a stylish and functional piece.

Meet Ka Totoy TalastasIt was my father who introduced me to Ka Totoy. Every morning, daddy would always switch the tv channel to Net 25 to heed Ka Totoy’s remarks on the critical issues shaking the nation. Now, I am not sure if his program Liwanagin Natin still exist but his edifying contribution in the travel and history show Landmarks (aslo in Net 25), is one of the reasons why I find the show so interesting to watch. With his retentive memory, you will be reminded of the rich history and culture of the Philippines.

Meet Drew Arellano
Drew Arellano is the sole host of the travel show Balikbayan and the ambassador of GMA 7’s Unang Hirit to different places and events in the country. With his good looks, great sense of humor, athletic physique and PR appeal, for me, he is a great choice. He’s very hilarious, but definitely a no non-sense guy. He blends with almost everyone. A kind of host who can interview people seriously yet you can sense a relaxed atmosphere.

Meet Tonipet GabaIn Art Angel, he is Kuya Tonipet – a guy of artistry and resourcefulness. In Kids on Q he acts as the squad leader of the star kids. In Tara, Let’s Eat! he is the luckiest man on earth having the opportunity to savor different cuisines from Filipino dishes to foreign flavors to exotic food. I like him so much because he is absolutely not the typical mestizo type tv host. Very Filipino with a kindhearted image, full of talents and intellectual humor.

Meet Michael V.
When the Supreme Deity showered talent and creativity on earth, Michael V. was wide awake. He is a multi-talented man. A tv personality who can sing, dance, host, play musical instrument, write, impersonate and of course make everyone laugh. This guy can do everything! Yet, the word arrogance remains a strange word. Michael V is indeed an extraordinary man and a golden treasure in Phlilippine entertainment industry.

Kitchen Must-Haves

As you all know, my repertoire in cooking is so limited. But I am always thrilled of watching cooking shows. Quickfire on QTV 11 is one of my favorites.
Quickfire, a 10-minute kitchen wonders with Chef-mom Rosebud Benitez, is an ideal destination for those who want to learn simple recipes good for everyday meals or special occasions.

Aside from the delicious meals, the show also showcases kitchen gadgets that any chef would love to have in his/her kitchen. Fabulous gifts for anyone who likes to cook.

Garlic chopper
Pepper Grinder
Stainless Steel Soap
A soap made of solid stainless steel that removes tough odors like garlic and onions as if by magic.
